Gorgeous Japanese Chiyogami Paper Sew On Buttons - Ume - Plum Blossom by SouZouCreations on Etsy

These are gorgeous! The paper is chiyogami paper with red and white ume (plum blossoms). There is gold in the center of the blossom adding a touch of elegance.

Each one is handmade by me using fabulous chiyogami paper and aluminum buttons. I applied multiple coatings of an acrylic resin that is made by a Japanese paper company. This resin is made specifically for Japanese paper as it keeps the paper from turning yellow.

Even though these are sealed, they are made from paper and therefore should only be used on items that don't need to be washed. They would be perfect for decorating bags, collages etc. You could also use them to make hair accessories, magnets etc.

They measure 1 1/2" (3.81cm). The ones in the picture are the ones you will receive.

Chiyogami has a long past but today the decorative patterns are silkscreened onto machinemade sheets of paper that is a mix of kozo ( a deciduous tree indigenous to Shikoku and Kyushu Islands in Japan) and sulphite (sulphite is used to keep the price reasonable). To create 1 piece of gorgeous chiyogami, a sheet of paper is silkscreened by hand with each individual color. Between applications of color, the sheets are dried on racks. You can imagine how time consuming and difficult it must be to line up each color in relation to the pattern!

Vintage Japanese Kashigata Stencil - Chrysanthemum - Taishou Period by vintagefromjapan on Etsy

This was an amazing find. This is from the Taishou Period which was from 1912-1926. This is called "型紙" or "katagami". This is a stencil that was used to make "kashigata" (for more information on "kashigata please see below). Apparently, these (we have around 100 to list) were found in an old Japanese sweets store in Kyoto.

This one has the image of chrysanthemum - image is very traditional Japanese images.

This one is made from paper-but not flimsy normal paper....this is wonderful thick Japanese paper and it is in fabulous condition even though it is at least 83 years old.

This stencil could be used but it would also be fabulous framed and hung on a wall.

This stencil measures 13.5 x 8 cm.

More information on "kashigata" (the sweets made from the molds that were made using the stencils).

In the past, when a person died, it was expensive to give flowers or fresh food so, people made sweets (these are made from soy flour, rice flour and sugar) in the form of flowers, fish etc. These items were then placed on the "butsudan" (family shrine found in the house) for the dead person.

The sweets was also used for holiday celebrations, tea ceremony etc. These are for decoration only-they are never eaten.

Beautiful Japanese Chiyogami Washi Paper - Gold Sakura Cherry Blossom RED (P26) by FromJapanWithLove on Etsy

This is hand-silkscreened chiyogami paper. There are many gold sakura on a red background. It's very pretty.

This measures approx. 95 x 32 cm or 37.4 x 12.6 inches. It comes folded in a bag (I bought it this way) and I will package it very carefully so it doesn't get damaged.

This paper is perfect for scrapbooking, card making, origami, collage or any project you can think of!
