Ema - Japanese Wood Plaque Kirishima Jingu Shrine Tengu Kagoshima (E9-26)

Japanese Shrine Plaque - Ema - Kagoshima Tengu

Ema - Japanese Wood Plaque Kirishima Jingu Shrine Tengu Kagoshima (E9-26)

This is an "Ema". "Ema" are small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshippers write their prayers or wishes. The ema are then left hanging up at the shrine, where the kami (spirits or gods) receive them. They bear various pictures, often of animals or other Shinto imagery, and many have the word gan'i (願意), meaning "wish", written along the side. In ancient times people would donate horses to the shrines for good favor, over time this was transferred to a wooden plaque with a picture of a horse, and later still to the various wooden plaques sold today for the same purpose.

Ema are sold for various wishes. Common reasons for buying a plaque are for success in work or on exams, marital bliss, to have children, and health. Some shrines specialize in certain types of these plaques, and the larger shrines may offer more than one. Sales of ema help support the shrine financially.

********This Ema is from Kirishima Jingu Kagoshima Prefecture.
Kirishima-Jingū (霧島神宮), also called Takachiho-no-mine-jina (one of the peak of Mount Kirishima and the place of Tenson kōrin) is a Shinto shrine located in Kirishima, Kagoshima prefecture, Japan.
The mountains of Kirishima are an important site in the creation mythology of Japan. It was in this area that the god Ninigi no Mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, is said to have descended from heaven to rule over the earth.
Ninigi no Mikoto landed on nearby Mt. Takachiho-no-mine bringing with him the three imperial regalia: the sword, the mirror and the gem; symbols of the imperial family. He eventually married a local princess, becoming mortal in the process, and established the lineage of Japanese Emperors.
Devoted to Ninigi no Mikoto, Kirishima Shrine was built during the Muromachi Period on a different site from where it stands today. Since then it has been destroyed numerous times by volcanic eruptions, but always rebuilt. The current shrine was constructed in 1715 where it survives to this day. Its large, beautiful buildings are surrounded by forest and have been declared important cultural property.
The image on the plaque is called a "tengu".
Tengu (天狗, "heavenly dog") are a type of legendary creature found in Japanese folk religion and are also considered a type of Shinto god (kami) or yōkai (supernatural beings). Although they take their name from a dog-like Chinese demon (Tiangou), the tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics. The earliest tengu were pictured with beaks, but this feature has often been humanized as an unnaturally long nose, which today is widely considered the tengu's defining characteristic in the popular imagination.
Buddhism long held that the tengu were disruptive demons and harbingers of war. Their image gradually softened, however, into one of protective, if still dangerous, spirits of the mountains and forests. Tengu are associated with the ascetic practice of Shugendō, and they are usually depicted in the garb of its followers, the yamabushi.

This Ema is from  the 21st year of the Heisei era (2009)
It measures about 15.5cm x 12cm x 7mm.

Branding Iron - Metal Stamp - Kanji Stamp - Japanese Vintage Yakin - Chinese Character Stamp - add to - increase - augment F41

Branding Iron - Metal Stamp - Kanji Stamp - Japanese Vintage Yakin - Chinese Character Stamp - add to - increase - augment F41

Branding Iron - Metal Stamp - Kanji Stamp - Japanese Vintage Yakin - Chinese Character Stamp - add to - increase - augment F41

This is a vintage branding iron called a "yakiin". These were/are used on wood, leather...food...anything you want to brand. Please see the last picture to see an example of how it can be used.

I think they would look fabulous if used in pottery as a stamp. Also...I think they could be used with ink but as it is metal, the image wouldn't be as smooth and clear as a rubber stamp -please keep that in mind if that is how you want to use it.

This is "ka" which means "add to, increase, augment".

They are from the "昭和" "showa period" . The "showa" period is from 1926-1989 but these are at least 30 years old.

This is made of iron. Please look at the pictures carefully

It measures about 20 cm long x 2 cm (the stamp) wide.

Japanese Kimono Stencil - Katagami - Vintage Stencil - Japanese Stencil - Large Stencil - Vintage Japanese Stencil - Flowers

Japanese Kimono Stencil - Katagami - Vintage Stencil - Japanese Stencil - Large Stencil - Vintage Japanese Stencil - Flowers

Japanese Kimono Stencil - Katagami - Vintage Stencil - Japanese Stencil - Large Stencil - Vintage Japanese Stencil - Flowers

This was an amazing find. This is from the "昭和" "showa period" . The "showa" period is from 1926-1989. This is called "型紙" or "katagami". Flower.

Katagami are made of multiple layers of thin mulberry paper which are bonded with a glue extracted from persimmon, which makes a strong flexible brown coloured paper.

This katagami was used for "katazome" which is the method of dyeing fabrics (kimonos) using a stencil and a resist paste. The resist paste was made with rice flour and when dyed, the dye didn't adhere to the areas covered with the paste. It was an inexpensive way to make all-over patterns similar to a woven cloth.

**** Please note that this katagami has a fine silk screen between the layers of paper. This was added to reinforce the stencil. This means that unlike some of our other stencils, you wouldn't be able to use a pencil-paint or ink would work.

For more of our vintage stencils please click here
http://www.etsy.com/shop/VintageFromJapan?section_id=6263764

*******PLEASE NOTE- there is a distinct odor from whatever ink was used on this. This is in excellent condition but it is vintage and therefore not perfect. This is also quite sparkly so sparky paint/ink must have been used.

This stencil could be used but it would also be fabulous framed and hung on a wall.

This stencil measures about 22 x 25cm.

PLEASE NOTE:This was very hard to take pictures of and it is much more amazing in person.

Vintage Japanese Stencil - Traditional Japanese Stencil - Family Crest - Flower

Vintage Japanese Stencil - Traditional Japanese Stencil - Family Crest - Flower

Vintage Japanese Stencil - Traditional Japanese Stencil - Family Crest - Flower

This was an amazing find. They are from the "昭和" "showa period" . The "showa" period is from 1926-1989 but these are at about 25-30 years old . This is called "型紙" or "katagami". This is a stencil that was used to make "kashigata" (for more information on "kashigata please see below).

This is really gorgeous! The shape is that of a "kamon" which means a family crest (which crest we don't know). There are no set rules in the design of a kamon. It most commonly consists of a roundel encircling a figure of plant, animal, man-made, natural or celestial objects, all abstracted to various degrees. Religious symbols, geometric shapes and kanji were commonly used as well. These symbols are often found in logos of stores (which help to identify what they sell), sushi restaurants, and on packages of food to lend an air of elegance. Senbei (Japanese crackers) and other traditional Japanese sweets may also use one.

The stencil measures about 7.8 x 6.5 cm.

More information on "kashigata" (the sweets made from the molds that were made using the stencils).

In the past, when a person died, it was expensive to give flowers or fresh food so, people made sweets (these are made from soy flour, rice flour and sugar) in the form of flowers, fish etc. These items were then placed on the "butsudan" (family shrine found in the house) for the dead person.

The sweets was also used for holiday celebrations, tea ceremony etc. These are for decoration only-they are never eaten.
