Beautiful Japanese Chiyogami Paper Flowers by FromJapanWithLove

Beautiful Japanese Chiyogami Paper - Flowers - Cherry Blossoms Half Sheet (P3)

Beautiful Japanese Chiyogami Paper - Flowers - Cherry Blossoms Half Sheet (P3)

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=22409165

This is hand-silkscreened chiyogami paper. This paper is beautiful-there are flowers and there are circles with a design that reminds me of tree branches. Some of those are in gold and ....what can I say-I love this paper!

This measures approx 95 x 32 cm or 37.4 x 12.6 inches. It comes folded in a bag (I bought it this way) and I will package it very carefully so it doesn't get damaged.

Chiyogami has a long past but today the decorative patterns are silkscreened onto machinemade sheets of paper that is a mix of kozo ( a deciduous tree indigenous to Shikoku and Kyushu Islands in Japan) and sulphite (sulphite is used to keep the price reasonable). To create 1 piece of gorgeous chiyogami, a sheet of paper is silkscreened by hand with each individual color. Between applications of color, the sheets are dried on racks. You can imagine how time consuming and difficult it must be to line up each color in relation to the pattern!

This paper is perfect for scrapbooking, card making, origami, collage or any project you can think of!

Love in Her Eyes — Adventures in Bentomaking: Bento Lunches by Pikko

Loving Bear

To make the eyes, I started off by folding a piece of nori twice so that I had 2 creases, then I cut out a tiny half heart to make the center. After that, I cut a big circle around it, then unfolded it so that I had the two circles with the hearts in the middle. I cut a smaller circle out of that then placed the eyes on white cheese and cut around them with a toothpick.

The punch I used for the mouth, nose, and lashes can be found on From Japan with Love or if you live on Oahu, these are available at Marukai. The mouth is actually two of the little lashes laid on top of each other to make the curve longer. I hand cut the ears.

The main dish is more steak from yesterday and on the side I have tomatoes, orange slices, asparagus, edamame, and heart tamagoyaki. To do the tamagoyaki I made a small roll with one egg, pressed it into a round rectangle shape, then cut it into fourths. Then I sliced off one corner and put them together to make the heart.

While the hearts in the eyes is something that I saw somewhere, the idea is actually inspired by something Baby Girl did last night.

So cute!! I want to make it for my lunch!!

Sakura Hello Kitty Bento (460) — Adventures in Bentomaking: Bento Lunches by Pikko

Hello Kitty Bento 2

I couldn’t decide on which angle I liked the best, so here’s another one from the side. To cut the flowers, I sliced raw carrots and a raw Okinawan sweet potato with my mandoline, then boiled the slices for a couple of minutes. I used a sakura cutter from this set that can be bought on From Japan with Love. I used a nori punch for the eyes and a squeezed straw to cut out her nose from a piece of takuan.

SO cute!!! Too Cute To Eat may be....

Vintage Japanese Kashigata Sweets Mold - Peach (P)

http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.125996608.jpg

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=33119815

This is a vintage mold called "kashigata".

Often made of sakura (cherry wood) and seasoned for about 3 years before carving, kashigata were used to make dried confectionery made of rice flour and sugar called rakugan. Earliest records show that this practice dates back to the mid-17th century. These confections were used as offerings and snacks for celebratory occasions and even unfortunate events. For example when a person died, it was expensive to give flowers or fresh food so, people made these sweets in the form of flowers, fish etc. These items were then placed on the "butsudan" (family shrine found in the house) for the dead person.

Kashigata were also used in the making of wagashi (nama-gashi or freshly made cake and hi-gashi or dried confectionery) for tea ceremonies.

Common kashigata motifs in the Edo era - chrysanthemums, plum blossoms
Meiji Era - spread of western technology - balloons, planes
World War II - national pride heightened - cherry blossoms, battleships - used as gifts for departing troops, ceremonies and commemorative occasions

With the advent of refrigeration, fresh fish replaced rakugan motifs like the sea bream. Sadly today, making offerings for fortunate and unfortunate events is no longer a common practice. This in turn has lessened rakugan demand although they are still found in tea ceremonies and homes. The decrease in kashigata artisans today has made kashigata carving a dying craft making kashigata itself a sought-after collectible.

*You can use this mold as food mold to cook. Please clean thoroughly before using. This is vintage goods and there are some damaged parts because it is old.

It measures 15 cm long x 10 cm wide x 4.5 cm tall. Inside it measures 8 cm long x 7 cm wide.

Vintage Japanese Typewriter Key Stamp Showa Period

http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.125203978.jpg

http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.125203852.jpg

http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.124556969.jpg

We were lucky to come across a case of these "katsuji" (Japanese typewriter "keys"). There are over 2300 of these. They are vintage but have never been used. These would have been the extras in case the ones in the machine broke. Please look at the last picture to see what an old Japanese typewriter looked like. There were at least 2000 keys so needless to say, this was only used in businesses.

They are from the "昭和" "showa period" . The "showa" period is from 1926-1989 but these are at least 30 years old as Japanese stopped using them once the word processor was invented.

This would be perfect for using as a stamp with ink or for stamping clay etc.

It measures 2.3 cm long (long enough to be able to get a nice grip) and 5mm wide. The Chinese character itself is about 5mm wide....so please note how tiny it is. It is made of metal.
