Vintage Japanese Wood Plaque Tiger Kuwanomi by VintageFromJapan

Vintage Japanese Wood Plaque - Tiger - Kuwanomi Dera Temple in Shiga Prefecture - E3-104

Vintage Japanese Wood Plaque Tiger Kuwanomi by VintageFromJapan

This is an "Ema". "Ema" are small wooden plaques on which Shinto worshippers write their prayers or wishes. The ema are then left hanging up at the shrine, where the kami (spirits or gods) receive them. They bear various pictures, often of animals or other Shinto imagery, and many have the word gan'i (願意), meaning "wish", written along the side. In ancient times people would donate horses to the shrines for good favor, over time this was transferred to a wooden plaque with a picture of a horse, and later still to the various wooden plaques sold today for the same purpose.

Ema are sold for various wishes. Common reasons for buying a plaque are for success in work or on exams, marital bliss, to have children, and health. Some shrines specialize in certain types of these plaques, and the larger shrines may offer more than one. Sales of ema help support the shrine financially.

********This is Ema is from Kuwanomi Dera Temple in Shiga Prefecture.

平成4年六月六日 = Heisei 4 nen 6 gatsu 6 nichi = June 6th in 4th year of Heisei Period (1992)

参拝 sanpai = pray

There is a tiger on this plaque.

It measures about 17.7 x 11.7 x 0.6 cm.

Vintage Japanese Yakiin Branding Iron 5 Five by VintageFromJapan

Vintage Japanese Yakiin Branding Iron 5 Five (F184)

Vintage Japanese Yakiin Branding Iron 5 Five by VintageFromJapan

This is a vintage branding iron called a "yakiin". These were/are used on wood, leather...food...anything you want to brand. Please see the last picture to see an example of how it can be used.

I think they would look fabulous if used in pottery as a stamp. Also...I think they could be used with ink but as it is metal, the image wouldn't be as smooth and clear as a rubber stamp -please keep that in mind if that is how you want to use it.

5 "go" = 5 five.

They are from the "昭和" "showa period" . The "showa" period is from 1926-1989 but these are at least 30 years old.

This is made of iron. Please look at the pictures carefully

It measures 19cm long x 2 cm (the stamp) wide.

Japanese Traditional Design Hand painted Red Gold Silver Black

This is a "mai ogi" or dance fan. This hand fan is simple yet elegant! The color is red, gold, silver and black. It is an amazing image of Japanese traditional design - arrow through the silver or gold target. A ceremony to remove an arrow from kinteki (gold target) or ginteki (silver target) in the matoya ceremony during Shinto rituals. It is hand-painted.

大和世 (世大和) Yamatu Yuu - The Japanese era. The Ryukyuan or Okinawan era under Japanese rule.

It is about 28.9 cm long and when opened about 49 cm wide.

It is vintage and has imperfections. There are light black, gold and silver stains on each side because it is hand painted. There is a name written on the edge. The 4th and last photos show it.

Typewriter Keys in Japan

We were lucky to come across a case of these "katsuji" (Japanese typewriter "keys"). There are over 2300 of these. They are vintage but have never been used. These would have been the extras in case the ones in the machine broke. Please look at the last picture to see what an old Japanese typewriter looked like. There were at least 2000 keys so needless to say, this was only used in businesses.

They are from the "昭和" "showa period" . The "showa" period is from 1926-1989 but these are at least 30 years old as Japanese stopped using them once the word processor was invented.

This would be perfect for using as a stamp with ink or for stamping clay etc.

It measures 2.3 cm long (long enough to be able to get a nice grip) and 5mm wide. The Chinese character itself is about 5mm wide....so please note how tiny it is. It is made of metal.

Samurai Print

We were lucky enough to come across a collection of papers, prints, magazine cut outs, newspaper clippings and more. This was someone's life long hobby and wow.....there are some very cool items!

It is a print. It is called "Shigemori in the Heiji War " by Eikyu Matsuoka.

Taira no Shigemori (1138 – September 2, 1179) was the eldest son of the Taira clan patriarch, Taira no Kiyomori. He took part in the Hōgen and Heiji rebellions. He died of illness in 1179

The Heiji Rebellion (Heiji no ran?, January 19—February 5, 1160) was a short civil war fought in order to resolve a dispute about political power. The Heiji no ran encompassed clashes between rival subjects of the cloistered Emperor Go-Shirakawa of Japan in 1159. It was preceded by the Hōgen Rebellion in 1156. This struggle is seen as a direct outcome of that earlier armed dispute; but unlike Hōgen no ran, this is not a dispute between members of the same clan. Rather, it became a struggle for power between two rival clans; and it is also seen as a precursor of a broader civil war.

It measures about 35.5 x 21.7 cm.
