Japanese Print - Woodblock Print - Vintage Japanese Magazine Cut Out - Samurai Bathing Vintage Art Magazine Insert in May 1932

I was so happy to find this print! In this print there are samurai named Hideyoshi and 2 women maids in bath room. This is an insert from a magazine. This print is a special insert in May, 1932 for Art magazine subscribers

Toyotomi Hideyoshi (February 2, 1536 or March 26, 1537 – September 18, 1598) was a preeminent daimyo, warrior, general and politician of the Sengoku period[1] who is regarded as Japan's second "great unifier."[2] He succeeded his former liege lord, Oda Nobunaga, and brought an end to the Sengoku period. The period of his rule is often called the Momoyama period, named after Hideyoshi's castle. After his death, his young son Hideyori was displaced by Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Hideyoshi is noted for a number of cultural legacies, including the restriction that only members of the samurai class could bear arms. He financed the construction, restoration and rebuilding of many temples standing today in Kyoto. Hideyoshi played an important role in the history of Christianity in Japan when he ordered the execution by crucifixion of twenty-six Christians.

It is in excellent condition but it is vintage so there are some imperfections.

This would be beautiful framed and displayed but it could also be used in mixed media art.

It measures 25 cm x 38.5 cm.

Vintage Japanese Game Card Chiyo Wife of Yamauchi Kazutoyo Set 15 From 1937

Vintage Japanese Game Card Chiyo Wife of Yamauchi Kazutoyo Set 15 From 1937

Vintage Japanese Game Card Chiyo Wife of Yamauchi Kazutoyo Set 15 From 1937

Karuta is the most popular among the many kinds of card games in Japan. It is played mostly on New Year's Day, but there are also national conventions for playing karuta. Each card has a poem, or portion thereof, written on it with a total of 100 poems in the game.

The 45th NHK Taiga drama (2006) is a dramatization of the life of Kazutoyo, with his wife Chiyo as the central character. Kōmyō-ga-tsuji: The story tells Chiyo,as a wise and beautiful wife, helped her husband Yamauchi Kazutoyo up from an ordinary samurai to the governor of an entire province, Tosa

****** PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT THE ENTIRE CARD SET but rather some of the cards as it was an incomplete game so we broke them up into smaller sets.

2 cards in this set.

In this set, the game of karuta involves two types of cards.

1 "reading" card with drawings: yomifuda
1 "grabbing" card with words: torifuda

There are whole phrases of waka from the collection called Hyakunin Isshu written on the yomifuda. Only the lower phrase of the waka is written on the torifuda. When the reader reads out the waka on the yomifuda, the player quickly searches for the card among the torifuda to look for the phrase that matches the one that the reader is reading. This is the basic rule.

These are from the "昭和" "showa period" . The "showa" period is from 1926-1989 but these are from 1937.

These would be great for using in your art...mixed media, collage etc.

Each card measures 7 x 4.8 cm.

You get the cards you see in the pictures.

Plum blossom fabric, a vintage print and a vintage ceramic bell!

Here are a few new listings. It is a mix of supplies and vintage items.

First we have this lovely cotton cherry blossom fabric in a lovely shade of pinky salmon.

Next, we have a vintage print of a traditional Japanese dance.

This is a beautiful Japanese print. There are 2 women dancing "Awa Odori". This is a magazine cut out. The painting on this print is shown at the 17th Exhibition of the the Nihon Bijutsuin (The Japan Art Institute). It is created by Kitano Tsunetomi.

The Awa Dance Festival is held from 12 to 15 August as part of the Obon festival in Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku in Japan. Awa Odori is the largest dance festival in Japan, attracting over 1.3 million tourists every year.

These ceramic bells, called "dorei" They are a lucky charm.

 https://www.etsy.com/listing/384624030/japanese-ceramic-bell-dorei-suzu-amulet?ref=shop_home_active_22

This is a ceramic bell called 土鈴 "dorei". 鈴 is "Suzu" which means bell and 土 is "do" which means earth, soil and is part of 粘土 meaning clay. So...this is a clay/ceramic bell. These bells have a ceramic ball inside so the sound is a coarse, rolling sound.

Bells of all kinds, have a long history in Japan. Dorei (ceramic bells) date back to the prehistoric Jomon Era (10,000 B.C.-300 B.C.). These bells were used to scare away evil. At Shinto shrines, large bells drape over entrances, as it is said that ringing them calls gets the attention of the Gods allowing one to acquire positive power and authority, while repelling evil.

This is a "migawari suzu" which is a type of "omamori". Omamori are amulets - they are physical objects that contain the spiritual essence and powers of a deity or buddha . " Migawari omamori" (身代わりお守り,means that the item takes the place of the person...so the bad luck is transferred, in this case, to the bell.

For a fabulous and interesting read on omamori please see http://www.tofugu.com/2014/06/25/omamori-protecting-yourself-in-little-ways/

This bell is from kamakura, kanagawa, Japan. Beautiful plum blossoms are painted on it. There are so many beautiful plum blossom spots to watch. It is in November 2001.

鎌倉 kamakura
鈴 suzu = bell
梅 ume = plum blossoms

This bell is about 11 cm high (including rope loop) and about 6 cm wide.
