Hur vill du att din Bentō ska se ut?

Eftersom jag är en ganska barnslig själv så skulle jag föredra en Kyaraben. I en sådan bento får du verkligen äta med ögat då maten är formad till dina favoritkaraktärer eller djur.

Karakteristiskt för en Bentō är indelningen av maten i olika “fack” och den innehåller oftast en portion ris, fisk eller kött och någon typ av inlagd grönsak. Variationerna är många och Bento är japanernas svar på antingen matlåda till arbetet eller take-away mat.

Det finns många olika typer av bento, några ex:
Shōkadō bentō - Traditionell japansk bento serverad i en svart trälåda.
Hinomaru bentō - Är inspirerad av den Japanska flaggan då den oftast innehåller vanligt ris och en umeboshi i mitten (inlagd röd frukt).
Sushizume – Bento innehållande sushi.
Hokaben – Take-away Bento.
Kyaraben (Charaben) – Den roliga benton framtagen av japanska mödrar för att göra maten mer tilltalande för deras barn. Ris/ägg/kött formad i barnets favoritkaraktärer inom manga/anime eller djur.

Denna typ av måltid går långt tillbaka och den första Bentōn tros kunna spåras ända tillbaka till 1100-talet. Då innehöll den endast hoshi-ii (tillagat och torkat ris). Till en början serverades den endast i behandlade trälådor. Numera är plast vanligast.
